I've never crabbed out of the Kayak in OBX yet. When I've done it from shore it's with a hand line and a net. I go to the little bridge just before you get into Collington. There's a bridge with a nice bulkhead on the right as you head in. There's a weed line about 10-25 yds from the bulkhead and the I've caught most of the bigger crabs by throwing out to a few feet from the weed line. If they pull you into the weeds, you'll never get them out. If you go there... GET THERE EARLEY like sunrise early. You wont get a ton of keepers there but will have enough action to keep yourself busy. My daughter still likes to go there.
I hear there's a nice pier under the Baum Bridge with deeper water where traps are more effective and the crabbing is suppose to be better. I've never been there ... Its a long haul from Carova. I've also been to the little bridge just past the Whalebone Tackle Shop. That place you also need traps. Also not a lot of keepers but I've seen some nice trout and croakers hauled out of there. Fish and crab off the bridge on the left as your headed west same side as the tackle shop. I caught a Huge Eel there once.
I live just outside Philadelphia (For Now) so most of my crabbing is in the Delaware bay. I use about 7 open top traps when Yakking. That about the perfect spread so that your traps aren't sitting too long. Last Year I cleaned up with about 1/2 to 3/4 of a bushel each trip that lasted a few hours.
