surf fishing rodanthe july/aug

Staying near the Rodanthe pier within walking distance of the beach. Im a pretty novice surf fisher, Iv had some luck so far pulled in a 30" red drum. Anyway I was wondering if its worth the trouble to drive somewhere to surf fish or to just stay near the pier where I can just walk right out. I have a 4 wheel drive btw but am pretty ignorent of all the recent restrictions.
