My grandfather said the same thing about that movie, I saw it in the theater in KDH with him when the movie came out.

He did talk some about it which was surprising from what he told me, said he was in all except for Midway.

In the Pearl Harbor attack he was the range finder for the guns on the St. Louis light cruiser there.

Said he had just finished getting dressed to go on shore leave when the battle stations alarm sounded.

He was running to get to his and a radio man grabbed him and pulled him around the corner just in time.

There was a rubber mat the kind made out of small strips of tires that he was running on and it flew all to pieces from a plane shooting at him.

He was up in a tower and had good view of everything, said they had to wait for the firing pins for the guns as had been getting reworked on shore.

He saw the Arizona explode, said the bomb that did it looked like it went straight down the smoke stack.

They did take down one of the planes but couldn't give the young man credit for doing it because he was and had joined underage.

The St. Louis was the first ship to make it out of there, the planes were getting ready to attack them and went after the Nevada battleship leaving.

The Nevada's captain beached the battleship to keep the channel clear for others.

Once out a mini sub attacked them, the captain told my grandfather to follow the torpedo trails and said he thought he got it.

The ship's prop hit the rocks dodging the torpedos and that was damaged.

They were ordered to find and destroy the Japanese fleet but could only do circles because of the prop.

All the ships that could were trying to get out of there.

Said they were recovering bodies out of water for 2 weeks.

And he lost a friend on another ship, the deck had collapsed on top of him and cut off his legs.

I saw a news story recently on those mini subs, the one found in the underwater dump is more believed to be the sub that attacked the St. Louis.
