fishing report 02/19/09

Fishing has been slow. There have been some stripers caught from the surf but its scattered along the beach. Fin Nagel's Capt. Ray reports catches of near shore stripers still being caught and he has some opening for winter striper fishing still available. If I was going to try to go after these stripers I would certainly consider off shore fishing at this time. Gary Oliver from the Outer Banks Pier is enjoying a break with his wife fishing in the Florida Key's this week "Go Gary" just don't fall over board and get eaten by a big grouper. Well I am getting ready for winter fishing on the Roanoke River and am ready for the spring spawing of the Stripers here. My uncle has fished the Chowan River each day this week and reports large catches of SMALL stripers there. He said they are still on the bottom of the river but the Heron will make their arrival soon in the river and the stripers will be active top water. Heron's usually start arriving in early March. Yesterday he caught 17 in 2 hours with only 2 keepers. He is fishing near the New Road, Ray's Beach and the Dowerey each day. Well I am going to go keep a tight line for now. Happy fishing to all, Debbie
