For the piers 6-7 foot medium light rod, double hooked bottom rig, size 4 or 5 hooks, 2 oz pyramid shaped sinker and cut up fish, shrimp, squid, Fishbites bloodworms for bait.
On the piers it could be bluefish, spanish mackeral, trout, flounder, pompano if the water is clear. Spot, croaker, sea mullet, puppy drum if it's muddy. It's not always like that just a rough idea of what might be there. Could be a variety of fish or just one kind.
You might find something big under the pier at the fish cleaning tables usually a shark or ray sometimes a big striper or other fish.
In the sound it could be trout, flounder, puppy drum, spot, croakers and other kinds of fish. Same rod, rig, hooks, bait but I'd use a 1 oz bank sinker.
The people working at the pier or tackle shops will be able to help you out.
