offshore charter in April

Heading down for the first week of April and finally have a chance to take the wife and older kids on a charter (baby staying with grandmother). Money is tight (like it is for everybody) but really want to take a full day offshore charter. I went several times as a kid but they have never been.

Are there any boats out there with really strong reputations? Is $1700 to $1800 the going rate for everyone or is there any variation from that?

We typically stay Nags Head area but this stay will be a little farther North so I would probably not want to go any farther South than Oregon Inlet Fishing Center unless it was worth it financially.

And, I have never planned one of these trips so is it really worth going on an offshore trip in April or should I just wait for the day when waters get warmer.
