I can attest to the color blindness. My mentor and friend, Dr.Jim Wright (a opthalmic surgeon when not fishing) confirmed that. Contrast to surrounding bottom and water (and depth and light) are a bigger factor. Something contrasting with a little shine to it should do the trick. ( After a misspent life of trout fishing, though, I believe fish see SOME color... But then again, the old guys that fish up here in VB swear by the gray smoke color...who knows?)
