That's really a shame about the rental company , but after what Brady said about the ice pick it may have been a vacationing jerk , rather than a local employee. I'm still surprised there isn't something they could do to replace it , or at least help you out.

I meant to reply to your earlier thread about rods/reels. I have an older one here that is perfect for fishing from the bridges/piers. Quantum Inshore Blue Runner , 7ft , MH , rated up to 2 ounces and 25 lb line. I have a Shimano Symetre 4000 on it and they work good together. It doesn't do the best at casting lures , but it's great for bottom fishing - I even managed to land a 3 1/2 ft. doggie on it , and Stripers up to about 20 lbs. A great all purpose rod , and one of the few I take on every trip
