A lot of people use the smaller 2500 size reels on their trout rods. Might not really matter for that one, Shimano will use the same reel body with a smaller spool for a different model.

The only trouble you might have with the small reels is spooling them out on the cast, you can avoid it with smaller size line and lighter lure weights if you have that problem.
