Inform The Public About Beac Access

Cape Hatteras Closing / Posted by: Mike Hayes / 02/16/12

Regarding the murdered animals, trapped in snares and leg hold traps and disposed of: The count of murdered animals in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreation Area is perhaps 1500 or more over the period of trapping. The last time I looked it was 1290. The count is available from the Park Service. They are doing it via their personnel and the Dpt. of Agriculture.

It is my belief that, if this information was available on a billboard on route 158 near the approach to the Outer Banks for the visitors to read, it would soon be emotionally viral in the minds of the public. The dead animal count and the Parks Service phone number, and a reference to an easy to remember web site with more details would be the appropriate information. The court of Public Opinion is the premier tool for exerting massive upward pressure from the public.

I have proposed the billboard idea to the organizations that are fighting to preserve beach access. I attended a NCBBA (Beach Buggy ) board meeting to express my billboard idea, they weren’t interested. They believe they can cure the access problem with legislation and law suits. I met with a staff member in NC Senator Burr’s office, Feb 24, 2010 regarding this issue. She said that Senator Burr couldn’t see enough legislative support to justify a legislative approach to the problem at Hatteras. Also law suits countered by law suits will never end until one side runs out of money. The short money side will always be on the access to the beach side.

The two environmental organizations that sued the Park Service to end access to the beach, DOW (defenders of Wildlife), and Audubon are also vulnerable for the court of Public Opinion. I joined DOW to be able to exchange e-mail. They responded to a question of mine, and answered by stating they promote the trapping of the animals. Audubon recently sold to a developer, a land trust gift, on the northern Outer Banks for 24 million dollars. Where are the retro property taxes for Currituck County?

John Couch of Outer Banks Preservation was hosted on Fox News with Brian Kilmeade, and never mentioned the animaltrapping. Who prepared the talking points for Couch? Did this representative have enough moxie to navigate verbally to a really damning point?

Every action, every sane human being takes is in response to an emotion. An emotion is simply a feeling that causes someone to take action. A properly worded Billboard would certainly create emotion on both sides. Personally I feel like I’m being caged like an animal by the Federal Government, having my rights to access MY public land taken from me. Perhaps we need to act out emotionally like the actual Vlad Dracula animals we are! Permission to forward this post granted. Mike Hayes
