The details are important. If you don't mind me saying I suspect your not checking your baits, the whole week during that time of year and not one skate or dog shark.

You might want to consider getting a lighter tipped rod with more action so you can tell when something is messing with the baits while in the sand spikes. You don't have to spend a lot on it.

For example the two piece 10 foot Tsunami Five Star throws 2 - 5 ozs. and has a cork tape wrapped handle, if I remember right costs around $35 at Stop-N-Shop. They also have better Tica rods in I think the $70-$80 dollar range.
