Got to fish the Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier day before yesterday for a little over an hour. Caught 7 small bluefish on long shank gold hooks and shrimp. Report at the pier house included Sheepshead , black drum and mullet , but I didn't have time to do much "serious" fishing.
Really nice concrete/wood pier that's only 5 or 6 years old , but the water seemed really flat and not very deep. I don't know how deep it would be off the end , I was maybe 2/3 out and it seemed at most 8-9 feet deep.
My Uncle did mention that a world record hammerhead was caught off of the old pier in the same spot in 1975 by a local pier rat. It was 14' and 700+ pounds , bait kayaked out by the bravest (or drunkest) one of the bunch , tied to a stand up rod with a 16/0 reel ? Supposedly they would often hook up before the kayak made it back...
Might be worth a shot to try a live bait rig off the end next time I'm down there :)
Happy New Year everyone!
