I have to agree with Lenny , the small ones are better. We catch them sometimes mixed in with Sheepheads , so a good eating size might be 5-6 pounds - certainly not more than 7 or 8. You get to a point where the smaller ones have too much waste vs the amount of meat you get and the bigger ones taste too strong or have worms etc.

Even with big reds , the smaller fish taste better. That's one reason why some of us don't mind the slot. Sure , some people used to make old drum stew , but I also remember seeing citations piled in dumpsters. The slot sized fish taste good baked , broiled or fried. :)
