You want to start to head back in if the water starts to white cap out in the middle, the sound can be choppy and gets rough fast. The southwest winds tend to pick up in the afternoon during the summer making the sound rough.

If it's not too far the long double bridge is a good area for fishing and crabbing, you can see the crabs hanging on the bridge pilings. Look for bird activity. Fluorescent green is a good lure color to cast around the bridge pilings. You will need a freshwater license on the north side of the Wright Memorial Bridge and a saltwater license on the south side. Also a freshwater license for Kitty Hawk Bay. The marine patrol can be under the bridge and might check you for a license, the coolers and safety equipment like a fire extinguisher.

There's a boat ramp in Duck but it's shallow, here's some more if you need them.
