It's hard to say and just guessing if the wind is blowing out of the south the southern sea mullet and pompano fishing could be good and a wind from the north probably a lot of spot.
The water temperature is usually still in the low 70s in the beginning of October and the best of the fall run is when it's staying in the 60s. If I was planning a fall trip my first choice would be either the last 2 weeks of October or 1st week of November. My second choice would be the beginning of September for the finger mullet run in October it's mostly menhaden for baitfish. The surf can be rough from hurricanes going by offshore more so during early September. You might have to fish from a pier or the catwalk at Oregon Inlet.
