Hi Al,
It is not just a matter of driving on the beach, but it is also a matter of economics. While you may still continue to come down here to fish, I have spoken to many who would not. I have had fishermen calling my store wanting to know if they should cancel their reservations. They don't want to spend the money to come down here if they cannot drive to the Point or Oregon Inlet or Ocracoke, or where ever they fish. How will those of us who live here continue to support ourselves? I don't know where you go to see the people leaving the beach covered with trash, but I personally have not seen that happen very often.
On the few occasions where it did, walking over and handing them a trash bag solved the problem. We always go out with extras just for that reason. I have seen far more trash thrown on the sides of the roads or in parking lots yet there is no talked of banning either area. Besides, the reason for banning beach driving in our hot spot fishing areas has to do with birds that are neither on the endangered species list or the threatened. They are nesting elsewhere and that is why ORV use is suppose to be restricted, even though there is no direct correlation between the two.
I agree with you that it will be much more difficult to have these areas re-opened instead of keeping them opened. They next meeting is scheduled to be held at the Fire Hall in Avon on March 18 and 19.
