The water is only 1 to 2 feet way out around the shore in the sound at Duck and most other areas, there is canals and channels in some places. I would suggest renting a boat at Fishing Unlimited on the Nags Head Causeway, you have to stay in that area. Something else to try would be a kayak rental or tour. Also the wind can pick up sometimes in the afternoon during the summer when it's coming out of the southwest. If you start seeing white caps start heading back.
