Wise words grasshopper.
I live at the beach and work in Columbia. I stopped by the marine fisheries office in Columbia and found out the answers. It was officially closed on December 31, 2010 and officially reopened on January 1, 2011. They really didn't explain why. Either way, the Albemarle Sound striper season is still open until April unless the quota is met.
On another note, the ocean season is in full swing and they are catching nice fish right outside of the inlet all the way up to the VA line. I've been out twice and had really great trips. Lots of big to really big fish trolling and jigging. Get out there if you can!
