Not nuts about piers. Prefer what used to be solitude of the beach and surf. Even there theres always 1 that'll crowd in if you're catchin anything - and thats when there's virtually no one around and open beach for miles. Have them + wannabe surfers and kids who must swim in fishing lines - again when the whole beach is empty - most summer days.

Not like it used to be. "Everything Changes - and Nothing for the Better"!!

Last of the "one that got away stories:

2 summers ago. Surf on HI. Fishin w/ adult son. School of menhadden come by and we pull a few in for fresh bait. Proceed to hook up w/ better fish than we'd seen for previous 10 days or so. Set hook in something big. Drew quite a crowd as played it (or it played me) for about 1/2 hour. Got it into wash but surf too rough to land it. Sent son into water w/ instruction to not lift w/ mono - but w/ the bottom rig. By this time obvious fish is 40" cobia and its now only 18" off the beach. (right then is when I should have handed off the rod and fetched fish myself), but, ... son does as instructed. Lifts fish holding bottom rig. Fish falls off. Crowd goes wild. (Me too). Bent the hook straight. As dumb luck w/ have it daughter taped the whole thing. Son videographer. Took 5 minutes of footage, added "Jaws" background music, and included it on all the copies of the "Families Year on DVD" he makes annually. Talk about laughter each time its viewed. Its so good he included it in the next years DVD's too!!

Last year it was the biggest blue crab to have ever been seen sound in Pamlico sound. All kiddin aside was the biggest I've ever seen. Since I never miss w/ the net, of course its placed in my hands. Crab is net shy so takes about 15 minutes to get it next to dock. Also crab is bigger than the net (a customized oversized one) but I don't see that till he bounces off - and I miss it!! And.....again all caught on tape... Of course it all goes onto last years DVD's again. Another "one that got away" that'll live in infamy:):)
