Wind Direction

I have been reading the postings here for a while now and have seen many references to wind direction. From what I gather southwest wind is just plain bad. Does that make a north easterly wind good? Does it matter if you are sound side or ocean side? Does it matter beach to beach? Just trying to understand a bit better and if this is a dumb question I decided to go ahead ask it because my Pop raised me to believe the only dumb question is the one you didn’t ask.
