You should be okay to go into the ocean most days in your 20 footer. Watch the inlet itself. If possible, try to go out or come in during slack tide. The next best thing is when the wind and tide flow in the same direction. Keep an eye out to the west for approaching storms.

Try this for Spanish mackerel and bluefish.

Put a black snap swivel at the end of the line coming off the reel. Attach a 2-6 oz trolling sinker onto the snap swivel. Attach another black snap swivel to the other side of the trolling sinker. Tie on a 20 foot leader of 20 lb mono. Attach a size 0 or 1 Clark spoon at the end. Use the Clark spoon model that has a built in swivel. This is the rig.

Get your boat close to trolling speed – go about 5mph. Throw the spoon in the water and let it trail off the back of your boat. Lower the sinker into the water. Feed out about 100 feet of line. Engage your spool and set the drag on light with the clicker on. Do the same thing with a second rod using a lighter or heavier weight. Let the second rod out about 150 feet. A third rod can be used also. Replace the trolling sinker with#0 or #1 planer. Let out about 50-75 feet of line. Run the spoon and leader right off the planer blade. Get up to speed – 6 or 7 mph.

Special notes: Use both silver and gold spoons until you are sure that one works better than the other. Use different sized spoons and keep track of which ones get hit the most. Don’t bother running one without any weight at all. Use a 2 oz on one and a 4 oz on the other. Really try to get a planer in the water-they work great! Troll for Spanish at 6-7 mph. If you are catching a lot of bluefish, increase your trolling speed. Keep up your speed when you are reeling in a fish – multiple hookups are very common. Have the angler reel up to the sinker or planer and then walk to the front of boat. The fish must be hand-lined from here by somebody in the back. Keep your lines in order and try to get tangles out as they occur. All of the swivels help with this. Shiny snap swivels will get bit off by fish so use the black ones. Really, really try to get a planer rig into your spread. When set properly, the line should form a 45 degree angle from tip to water surface. When a fish hits, the line will angle up and get more parallel with the surface. The drag on the planer rod needs to be set tight enough to avoid slipping when running sat trolling speeds. The drags on the other rods will have loose drags and must be tightened up a little when fighting fish.

This info should help. Let the board know how you do. Good Luck.
