Fishing in Duck

We are going to be in the Duck area over July4th weekend and into the following week. I do not have experience fishing the OBX but am going to borrow some proper tackle/etc form a neighbor of mine whom has plenty coastal fishing experience.

I am hoping to do some surf fishing and if that doesn't work spend some time on the Pier there is Duck.

My questions are that I have no idea what the best baits are to use and weather early morning, or evenings would be better to fish. Also any tips would be great!

I know everything depends on what Im fishing for but really I just want to have a good time.
