I'd try to find a spot on the beach where the grass isn't washing up or try different tides like outgoing or low. Fishing one rod with the line tight will help. You might get out past the grass on a pier or try in the sound.

The cheap Daiwa reels would be the best way to go. Frisco Rod & Gun has had good prices on their reels and you could also try Red Drum Tackle in Buxton.

If the bail is sticking you can put some reel oil around the outside joints while opening and closing the bail and that should get it working again. You might have to do it several times over a few days or weeks of using the reel if it's bad. Another way is to spray the entire outside of the reel off good with WD40 and it will help with the corrosion and sand. Don't spray the inside of the reel with WD40.
