I tie a simple rig. Tie a snap for the weight at the bottom of a 4 ft. piece of heavy mono. Thread 3 or 4 hooks onto the line. Push them to the end so you'll have room to work and start by tying a surgeons loop with the bottom hook about 1 foot away from the weight. Keep moving up the leader with surgeons loops every 8-12 inches. I use smaller hooks for smaller fish - I guess you should use a hook that is appropriate for the fish you want to catch. I like a #3 for a general purpose hook, a #2 if they are running bigger.
In saltwater I prefer a long shank hook most of the time when I'm fishing for bottom feeders like spot and croaker.
Also I use flourocarbon or however the hell it's spelled. Berkley Vanish is a brand name. Triple Fish also makes it.
