Good advice from Capt D. Cottonmouths can be found as far north as Back Bay. The sounds and marshes behind Corolla and Carova are loaded with them. They are really land snakes that like to hunt in or near water. Watch where you walk and stay on trails. They have a tendency to stand their ground rather than flee and this gets folks in trouble. They are also another good reason for keeping your dogs on a short leash. Don't hassle them or try for that awesome picture. On the other hand, don't let them stop you from enjoying the Outer Banks.
