Not too early for serious post re: poisonous snakes. In past years a rental facility sound side in Nags Head was closed for a time due to # of moccasins on the property, and a big (non-native) rattler was found at one of the ramps on HI. You go off into the bush and your odds increase geometrically.
Fun to joke around, but must be aware - even on the ocean side - that threats may be present. Watch where you walk and esp. warn the kids to give all snakes a wide berth.
Northern beaches not exempt either. Years ago Whalehead Club posted signage. Not sure if still posted.
