Icefisher, I teach school locally and for the past two summers, my job was driving groups of people up the beach in a suburban. We got on at Corolla and would drive to the area that you are talking about. I have seen several Blacktip sharks caught while doing those drives. I would always stop when somebody was hooked up. It seems that a decent sized bait (fresh fish) was the key. Most of these folks were using medium to heavy surf rods with standard fishfinder rigs. An extra heavy shock leader was used to avoid excess abrasion and 3 feet of wire to avoid bite offs. Some of these fish were getting close to 5 feet but most were half that size. They put on an awesome jumping show most of the time. Let us know how you do and always keep an eye out for the wild horses. They can show up anywhere along that beach.
