My advise only works sometimes. The catwalk might be good at night on the weekend of the new moon on Dec. 9. Could be stripers, trout or bluefish. The east side of the catwalk will be open and that side is easier to fish on an outgoing tide. A wind that is blowing from a westerly direction could make the inlet grassy. If the wind is blowing from a northerly direction it will definitely be bone chilling cold out there. People that fish the catwalk at night hang lights over the water which attracts baitfish. Most use generators but you can get by with a lantern on a rope just don't splash it.
The best way to get a big fish up would be to use a basket net on a rope like the piers let people use. What I do is put the net in away from the fish and sneak up from below and behind the fish. Then scoop the fish up real fast at an angle tail first. Don't go head first you'll spook the fish and have a hard time the next try. I'd also put a small float on the end of the rope incase you drop it.
If you don't have a net a weighted treble hook on a rope will work just wrap the rope around the line once and slide it down to the fish and you'll hook the fish in the gills.
In the surf the street and parking lot lights that shine on the water further north can be good. High tide and clear water would be the best.
