If you haven't been in a long time , I would recommend a pier simply because you don't have to cast a mile to fish and there is normally some type of fish around them. You won't have to worry about reading the beach to find holes either. Another plus is that most piers have a tackle shop and are usually helpful when it comes to choosing rigs and bait for whatever people have been catching. I've always liked the Rodanthe pier , but that's just me and you can catch fish off of all of them.

Beach closures are probably going to be an issue if you want to fish from the sand. Some of the tackle shops could probably point you in the right direction when you get down there.

As far as what type of fish , that will depend on water temperature. Warmer is better for most fish, so you may want to keep an eye on that before you go.

Good luck!
