The stripers will be going to the rivers to breed, you could catch one that got lost. You might get another shot at them in late summer. They will move out of the sound into the surf if the water gets too warm in the sound. You can get into them at Oregon Inlet and sometimes around the fishing pier lights at night, it's mostly the smaller size fish.

Re: cheap rods, the cheaper Daiwa rods are good. I still use the old Daiwa Sealine-X surf rods for bottom fishing, they were $70 dollar rods. Those rods were discontinued, the last batch was breaking and I think that was why. You might want to check out the Tica and Tsunami rods, they cost about $60-$100+ dollars depending on the size rod. I'd suggest the heavy version for bottom fishing and the light version for throwing lures. I'd shop around at TW's, Whalebone, TI's on the bypass and Stop-N-Shop. You might have to settle for what you can find.
