Last year during late March if I remember right there was puppy drum being caught at the little bridge on the causeway and at the bait pond by the bridge on the north side of Oregon Inlet, the bird closures stopped it except for the boats. The puppy drum were being caught with trout jigs. Also croakers were being caught out near the end of Avalon Pier with frozen squid, that pier opens around the middle of March. I don't know what this March will be like but history tends to repeat itself. I've seen lights at night off Kitty Hawk this past couple of weeks from the commercial boats and they looked kind of close, bright instead of dim. Those boats are usually fishing for croakers and gray trout.
If so the croakers could spend the winter out there and come in when the water temperature around the beach warms up 45-50 degrees, 50-55 even better. What I've noticed in the past is the best first day of spring north of Oregon Inlet for bluefish and a lot of everything else is usually after 3 or 4 days in a row of 58 degree water temperature, the switch is turned on for sure. That could be late April for Southern Shores just guessing at it. The best place for the water temperature is the research pier site for Duck, the water temperature for Avalon Pier can be 2 weeks old. Rutgers sea surface temperature site is also good. The water temperature has a big part in spring fishing.
