If you make it out on the beach it's probably going to be a puppy drum weekend everywhere and during the first part of the week with the winds blowing from the beach making the water muddy and cold. The big size pups 4-5 pounds will straighten the cheap wire hooks. I'd use strong 4/0 circle hooks and snell some 80 pound mono to the hooks and put them on the standard double hook bottom rig. The tackle shops might have some already made up and they should have some fresh mullet or menhaden you can use for cut bait. The puppy drum also like fresh shrimp from a tackle shop, seafood market or grocery store. Just peel the shrimp and cut it into big chunks.
Might be some croakers in the surf, probably won't be any spot if the water temperature drops maybe some black drum and northern sea mullet if it doesn't drop too much. I'd try size 4 or 5 Eagle Claw snelled hooks on the double bottom rig with small pieces of frozen squid for the croakers or fresh shrimp for the black drum and sea mullet. In the surf I usually use a 4 oz. pyramid shaped sinker or a 3 oz. storm sinker. The 2 oz. pyramid for the piers. If the ocean is rough or has a strong current running and your not holding bottom you'll have to use a bigger sinker.
