I'll put my two cents in. I would practice with the small net first to get good at throwing a net , then move up to the eight footer. A 6 or 8 have always been my favorite sizes because it seems baitfish can't get out from under them as easily ( especially the larger bait I use for stripers )
As far as advice on throwing it , I'm not even going to try. I could show you in person but I'd never be able to explain it. Lot of different ways to throw them , so you'll just have to experiment and find what works for you. They do open better if you can get a little spin when you throw it, you kind of have to snap your wrist like you do when throwing a frisbee , but again , you'll learn more by doing it often than you will from books,internet or video.
I used to practice in the back yard when I was first learning and now I do OK with a big net. Keep after it and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time!
