Goin' down down baby

I'm going down to Buxton the week after Thanksgiving. Winter fishing the OBX for the first time. What should I expect to get into in the surf or the sound? What tackle should I bring along with me as well? Are there any beach restrictions in Dec.? In a nut shell, what the heck do I need to know before showing up???
