Chewy Molasses Cookies

This is an old one that came from a black housemaid the family had a long time ago, it is sweet like candy.

Chewy Molasses Cookies (Mary Foster's)

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp additional sugar for rolling

Melt shortening over and cool, pour into large bowl. Add sugar, molasses and egg and stir well. Combine flour, soda and spices in small bowl. Add mixture to shortening bowl and stir well. Cover bowl with plastic and refrigerate for 10 minutes. Roll dough into 1 inch balls and roll balls in additional sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 7-8 minutes till barely set. Let stand 2 minutes and remove from cookie sheet. Store in airtight container.
