Richard, while many people use $200-300 rigs , the occasional fisherman can have just as much fun with much less expensive gear. I would start out with a open face spinning reel/rod combo with about 15 lb. line , 7-foot medium action or no more than medium-heavy. You can get these for less than $40 at most tackle shops. It doesn't have to be too big. I would use a 2-hook bottom rig with a pyrimad sinker, weight depends on surf conditions. You should have several different weights, 3-5 oz.; hooks, snelled #4 or #2. Bait, you can use squid, finger mullet or cut bait, shrimp, bloodworms or Fish-Bites. In September you can catch a varity of fish. Large spot, pompano, flounder, puppy drom, blues, etc. It is a little early for trout, big drum, stripers but you never know. Remember to get a NC license.
