you will most likely want a medium action baitcasting or spinning rod whichever you are comfortable with, a double hook bottom rig with #4 or #6 hooks(available at all tackle shops and some walmarts), 15 to 20lb mono, 2 to 3 ounce weights(i prefer pyramid sinkers but the ovular ones are good too), and a few gotcha plugs or stingsilvers. This setup will allow you catch just about anything that bites from spot and croakers to blues and small sharks. The best bait will depend on what's running but squid has always been a solid choice for me and a box(which costs about $4) lasts me and my father all week(just take a few squids out at a time and freeze the rest) but be sure to check at the tackle shops.
