In Response To: Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year (RACfish)

As the years go by this old Capt reflects a lot on times gone by...including the Christmas holidays. Remembering going to grandparents homes on Christmas day. Seeing their annual traditions played out. We were 2 generations apart but respected and enjoyed them, their traditions and beliefs.

Grandparents on one side were business people, entrepreneurs, with a business, crops in other states, board members of a bank, patent owners, owners of one of the first cars in the city. That grandpa wore a 3 piece suit daily, a gold chain to his pocket watch and spats over his shoes. The other grandparents were hardly able to speak English and scraped by from the few dollars that grandpa made constructing furniture from abandoned dunnage he carried 5 miles or more to his garage workshop. He never owned a vehicle. He had no electric tools. He had no heat. He made his own glue from horse hoofs. With that grandmother seasonally we made pierogi's, sausage, and "punchki". She knew no games but one with dice.

Totally different but totally loved. Those Christmas visits were special, not because we had our 2nd and 3rd Christmases of the day there but because they were real people we admired for all their differences.

Of course they are long gone, and so this Capt's parents.

Youngest son tested positive for COVID yesterday so the crews family Christmas will not be the same. Gone will be their mom, 1 daughter and husband in Va, and the son and family with COVID.

But rest assured, the crew gathering together tomorrow will remember and tell stories of their grandparents. As at every family gathering, slides and videos of the old days will magically appear to relive some of the old days. Tears will flow, but more so stories and laughter.

Memories and love never die.

From this Capt and crew ... wishes to you all for a Merry Christmas and a better New Year.
