I also have both. I feel I can get my metal ones in the sand a little deeper and the sit up much higher. In most cases, my PVC are fine to use. I’ve had a few big rays/sharks pull the PVC spikes out of the sand when using my longer rods while the metal spikes have never come out. Also some of the metal ones come with a “foot rest” or other area that you can use a mallet to get them a little deeper. Also heard that the PVC spikes will snap in colder temps especially if they’re too long although I’ve never seen it happen.

With all that said I mostly use the PVC spikes. I only need the metal ones if I need my rod to sit up a bit higher as my metal spikes are a bit longer than my PVC.
