shark bait?

I'll be visting Hatteras in August, and I plan to surf fish. My wife's brother has convinced her that if I'm using live bait, shrimp, bloodworm's, or something of the sort, that it could bring sharks to the area. Is there reason for concern? Thanks in advance, Jeremy.
