Fishing in Avon....

We are heading down to the Outer Banks the ened of July and will be staying in Avon. It has been 18 years since I've done any surf/pier fishing and I've forgotten what I once knew. My son and I bought a couple of 7ft med/heavy rods with Penn reels and 12lb test. I have #4 circle hooks and little else. Would you folks suggest some tackle and bait that wew should pick up?
