Ed,

I have had a lot of success using commerical pots in the sound. You can buy them at most tackle shops. Probally to big to cart back home after you buy them unless you have a pu truck. I'm luckey enough to have a friend that lives down there who lends them to me. If you can use one just walk out into the sound until you are about waist deep and drop it Skank chichken is the best bait.I have caught 20- 30 legal crabs at a pop.You will need a certain licence depending on where you are. Wright bridge north needs a freshwater lic. Make sure you check the the restrictions at the location you are fishing.
