Real fishing question.

Ok, I've got a question for all.
2 years ago I bought a clicking, weighted bobber rig in Fla. Used it twice in the ICW and didn't catch anything.
Would this be useful on the Sound to keep the bait away from the crabs? Anybody out there ever use them?
Be down for Memorial Day week and bringing the whole clan. Two son-in-laws have very little fishing experience, so any help catching fish would be good.
