Usually you snag them with lures, the line your using should have been enough to land one if it was a ray. Your knots might not have held.
What I do with mono knots is take the knot and line coming from the knot and squeese it tight between my fingers, then I take a lighter and melt the ends that are trimmed off. You can tap the melted end on the metal part of the lighter to shape it better. This won't damage the knot or line if you keep it between your fingers.
If the knot isn't tied right the melted end will slip down to the knot but hold for awhile. You'll have to retie the knot or the melted end will pop off eventually and the knot will come apart. You'll see where the knot became unraveled on the end of the line by having a little twisted end on it.
