Oh ya...raise worms for profit.

As kid in inner city was always lookin for ideas to raise a few bucks vs. a few pennies (like collecting and returning empty bottles). One venture was to grow and sell worms. Knew could undercut by 50% boathouse prices at nearby lake.

Had limitless start up supply across street in cemetery leaf piles.

Over several weeks brought about 20 3 lb. coffee cans full (no filler - solid worms), to fill old Coca-Cola chest. Kind stores would fill w/ ice and bottles)...bout 3 ft. x 6 ft.

Red worms + what we called "jumpers"...worms that would jump when exposed to air/light.

Filled chest to start w/ sphagnum moss we reclaimed from the backs of discarded cemetery wreaths as it was what boathouse packed their worms w/. Added corn meal every few days.

Bought containers (like used for Chinese takeout w/ the wire handles.)

First day to fill containers and set up sales a complete disaster. Not able to find more than 20 - 30 worms total in the chest. Apparently had gone cannibal and eaten each other.

Other money making endeavors = making casts, then pouring plaster in to make (and paint) statues, and roasted peanut sales. Neither made much profit but at least made more than spent for supplies.

Guess genetics from grandfather who was inventor, creator and bottler of a "bitters" brand (no - not moonshine), owner of green bean fields in the south... an entrepreneur (when no one ever heard of the word). Had one of the first cars in big city. (Of note ... back then license plates were = just the metal #'s. You had to attach to whatever you wanted to make a plate).

Know...fell into the "wayback" machine again.

Thought this back in the day stuff might change topics from pies and salt and pepper. (BTW...grandmother used to do same mix of scat and water for her plantings).
