Carova - 7/6-7/12

Arrived early on 7/6 and across the Wright Memorial in under 6 hrs (new record) but took another 3 to get to the house. House was in pretty good shape for once so I started fishing right away.

Had a steady pick on small sea mullet most of the week on the real bloodworms.

Monday ran into a guy I met way back in November when he caught a sting ray and got a barb between his finger and thumb. He really didn't know what he was doing with regard to fishing so I gave him a few pointers and he landed two nice mullet (14" +/-) and a nice trout while I got only small 6" mullet. Then he asked me what to do with the "shiny" thing the guy at the tackle shop sold him. I told him to cast the hopkins spoon into the surf and retrieve. About five casts later he foul hooked a nice Spanish in the tail. I couldn't bear to fish anymore so I packed it in.

Tuesday eve the wind shifted to the east and I had a steady pick of blues (12-14) on cut mullet. Went home to find 10 yr old oven wasn't working. Called around to see if I could get one delivered before tenants showed up on the 13th. Best price I could get get was $75 an hr.

Wednesday decided to go get an oven myself. Took me 4 hrs to get to the Home Depot and back. On my way up the beach saw lots of breaking fish. Most of them pretty far out and lots of weeds. The 15 mph speed limit was killing me. Got back to the house moved the oven in and headed back to the beach armed with a 3 oz metal jig. Found a school close to shore and cast on the edge and it was on!! I hooked into something that peeled about 100 yds of line off my reel in about 5 secs. It stopped to shake its head for a bit and I couldn't move it then It made one more fast run and snapped my 20 lb line. My gear couldn't handle something that big and that fast. Would have like to at least seen it. Neighbor said he saw some drone footage of some big sharks smashing schools of bait. I ran back to the truck tore apart my tackle box and tied on the next heaviest metal I could find and it just wasn't heavy enough to get out to the breaking fish and I was a bit concerned about wading out too far it it was sharks. I cast metal off and on till the sun went down. Caught a few blues on bait and some more mullet. I knew I should have brought the Kayak

Thur. Wind was from the SSW almost no surf and no sign of bait in the water so I went back to catching mullet. Not much happening. Caught a few blues on cut mullet.

Friday wind was WSW the ocean looked like a lake. I managed to get into some nice mullet (14") that were ridiculously far from shore and at the very limit of my 10' rod as I was trying to catch a ray or a shark this time. Some young boys from WV stopped to talk about fishing and one of them said I think you just got a hit on that big rod while I was re-baiting another rod and reaching for my big 10', it bent in half and pulled out of the sand spike and into the surf. Rod, reel and everything. I ran into the water and picked it up fish still on but couldn't reel cause it was choked with sand then it snapped my 30 lb line. That had to be a shark. I know I had checked my drag earlier because at one point I had it too loose. Not sure what happened but since my reel if now full of sand, I'll have to tear it apart and find out.

Overall, nice trip. Will be back in the fall when the drum start running.
