what's in the surf

have to take the wife to university of va. (ear problem) in mid October. I know everybody is fishing for red drum at that time. I thought I would ride on down. I like to fish for the smaller fish (croaker, kingfish,spot,trout, etc. anything in surf at that time, or should I come earlier. mostly fish avon buxton area.
