Here's another. (Again, may have posted during doldrums in past years.)
Circa 1953. Dad scraped together some $$ and bought shell of a cottage adjacent to park land. No plumbing or electrical. Rural. Last mountain lion shot year before nearby.

Parents and neighbors playin cards around 2300 hrs. on a Sun. Steamy hot after earlier rain storm.(AC...come on...had an out house). In distance to west could hear dog barking, then another closer and yet another very close. Suddenly our dog who never barked at anyone began barking and jumping against screen door. After dog quieted down a dog to east started barking, then another further away to the east. Dad went out w/ 5 cell flashlight (our only weapon) and found nothing.

Next morning before fishin (legal post) had chores incl. weedin vegetable garden w/ sister. Found big tracks in direction west to east. Made plaster cast. Could not find matching tracks in library books. Dad took track to Natural History museum in Cleveland OH. Was "run out on a rail" for as staff put it..."trying to perpetrate a hoax!!"

Week or two later article daily newspaper (the Cleveland News) reported about animal that had parents terrified in town about 20 miles away. Something that screamed at nite like "a woman bein strangled". Local law enforcement and hunters w/ dogs had no success in tracking, in fact one time while on scent, dogs turned 180 and ran away.

Many years later newspaper reported deathbed confession of carny worker who said screamin animal was a "freak" that escaped during a never reported carnival train derailment.

We still have the track. Kids and grandkids all did school papers on it thru the years. 3 1/2" wide and 7" long, w/ large claws.

Was it what passed thru that steamy nite in 1953??. Never know.

***********

Now come on, "surely" you guys have some experiences to share!!
