If the water is clear you will usually have more sight feeders like bluefish than bottom feeders which is when you have light winds that have been blowing off the ocean. If the wind is real strong from the northeast this can churn up the water and make it muddy like from a cold front. During that time of the year the big yellow belly spot fishing can be really good when the water is rough from a strong northeast wind but you might have to go to a pier further south, Avalon, Nags Head or Outer Banks.

The easy way for spot fishing on the piers is call them and see what's happening, the numbers are in the local telephone book yellow pages under fishing. Then go check and see how busy the fish cleaning tables are on the pier and watch the side from the beach for awhile to see what's coming up. If the spot fishing looks good at the pier get your gear out of the car and go. I use the size 5 Eagle Claw snelled hooks on a standard bottom rig. The bloodworm flavored Fishbites works just as well as real bloodworms and doesn't bite or squirt blood all over you.

The best way to clean spot is fillet them and leave the skin attached at the tail then run the knife under the skin from the tail and then cut the rib bones out, this way it's boneless and you don't have to scale the fish because you're cutting off the skin. Works for the smaller size spot too, you get boneless fish chips. They keep a long time in a cooler if you keep them covered in ice and keep the water drained off by removing the cooler plug. If the ice melts the fish on top will go bad, their eyes will get cloudy and their belly will bust open and you will have to throw those fish away. I'd try to clean them as soon as possible. For long term storage I freeze the fillets in water in ziplock bags, this keeps them from getting freezer burnt.

The weather is unpredictable and it's never a sure thing with the fish, my advice only works sometimes. The only way that I've found that sort of works for the weather is if you look at the 10 day forecast and you have a big drop in the temps for a couple of days that means a cold front and winds from the north. The extended forecast is usually right about that but it can be a day or two late or early.
