I took care of a bathroom (removed all the popcorn and smoothed it out) with a spray bottle and drywall knife. It went pretty well... except for that "doing all the work over your head" thing.

After it was all done, I repaired any digs and dings with mud and a knife. Sanded. Painted.

Looks good -
